Founded in 1992, the dermatopathology laboratory is staffed exclusively with board-certified dermatopathologists. M. Yadira Hurley, M.D., Director of the Division of Dermatopathology, completed her dermatology residency and dermatopathology fellowship at Washington University. Nicole M. Burkemper, M.D., completed her dermatology residency and dermatopathology fellowship at the Mayo Clinic. And, Claudia I. Vidal, M.D., Ph.D. completed a residency in Anatomic Pathology and a fellowship in Dermatopathology at The Mount Sinai Hospital; New York.
Drs. Hurley and Burkemper are board certified in dermatology and dermatopathology and use their patient care experience and expertise to correlate clinical manifestations with pathological findings. Dr. Vidal is board certified in both Anatomic Pathology and Dermatopathology. The faculty’s cumulative years of clinical and research experience, as well as their breadth of expertise in the diagnosis of cutaneous disease, provide a comprehensive clinical service for our referring physicians and their patients.
The laboratory manages the processing of biopsies at our Saint Louis University location at 1755 South Grand Blvd. Referring physicians can expect a 24-48 hour average turnaround time for routine biopsy reports.
The laboratory also provides consultative services and Direct Immunofluorescence testing. In 2006, the Division of Dermatopathology dramatically enhanced its service to referring physicians with the implementation of web-based reporting software. This software provides physicians office-based, real-time, fingertip access to pathology reports.
This improvement to the service also allows for access to reports outside the lab’s normal working hours. Each referring physician has his or her unique Saint Louis University Dermatopathology account password for confidential web-viewing. Visit the website at dermpath.slu.edu. For more information about the laboratory service, please contact Trisha Bowman, Wanda Arnold-Reid at (314) 256-3413.
